Drone Wind Turbine Inspections
Drones have become one of the most effective tools for wind turbine inspection. Turbines are often in remote, exposed locations, and traditional inspections mean rope access teams climbing the tower, often in difficult weather.
Our CAA approved pilots capture the blades, tower and nacelle in UHD 4K, recording leading edge erosion, cracks, lightning damage and other defects in close detail. Thermal imaging from our BINDT Level 2 qualified thermographers can help reveal early signs of delamination and other hidden problems.
The result is a clear, dated record of each turbine’s condition, helping you plan maintenance, reduce downtime and keep engineers off the tower.

What Your Turbine Inspection Includes
Every turbine inspection is delivered digitally, organised by turbine and blade, ready to share with your maintenance team.
| Deliverable | What it is | Included |
|---|---|---|
| UHD 4K blade imagery | Close-up images along the full length of each blade, on every side. | Standard |
| Tower and nacelle imagery | Images of the tower, nacelle and hub, recording visible damage and corrosion. | Standard |
| Organised by turbine and blade | Images sorted into folders by turbine, blade and side, so defects are easy to find. | Standard |
| Digital delivery | A secure download link, ready to share with engineers, insurers or asset managers. | Standard |
| Thermal blade inspection | Thermal imaging to help spot delamination and other hidden defects. | Optional |
| Thermographer’s report | Written findings from our BINDT Level 2 qualified thermographer. | Optional |
| Repeat inspections | The same capture repeated over time, to track how defects develop. | Optional |
Turbines normally need to be stopped during the inspection. We’ll agree the arrangements with your site team at quote stage.

What a Turbine Inspection Can Find
Wind turbine blades take a battering from the weather. A close inspection can pick up:
Left unchecked, small defects grow into costly repairs, lost generation and unplanned downtime. Regular inspections help you catch them early.
Safer inspections
Keep engineers off the tower
Traditional turbine inspections rely on rope access teams or platforms, working at height in exposed conditions. A drone captures the same detail from the air, often in a fraction of the time.
Engineers can then review the imagery from the ground, and only send a team up the tower when a repair is actually needed.
Safer, faster inspections, with climbs saved for the repairs that need them.

Why drones
Why use a drone for turbine inspections?
Getting close to a turbine blade usually means rope access or specialist platforms. A drone gets the same close-up view safely, with everyone staying on the ground.
- No one climbing. Blades and towers are inspected without rope access or platforms.
- Close-up detail. UHD 4K imagery along the full length of every blade.
- Faster inspections. Less time on site and less downtime for the turbine.
- Thermal where needed. Our thermographers can look for hidden defects like delamination.
- Remote sites covered. We inspect single turbines and wind farms across the UK.
Every blade recorded close-up, with no one working at height.
Sectors We Cover
Turbine inspections for owners & operators
We inspect wind turbines for farms, businesses, community energy schemes and wind farm operators across the UK.
Our service is suitable for
- ›Single turbines on farms and rural businesses
- ›Community energy schemes
- ›Onshore wind farms
- ›Commercial and industrial sites
- ›Schools, colleges and university estates
- ›Local authority and public-sector sites
- ›Water treatment and utility sites
- ›Asset managers and maintenance contractors
- ›Insurers and loss adjusters
For operators with multiple turbines, we build a consistent record of every blade, helping teams compare condition and plan maintenance.
Why choose us
Why choose Drone Site Surveys?
Drone Site Surveys specialises in professional drone inspections, delivering detailed, high-resolution imagery to support wind turbine condition assessments and maintenance planning.
Our CAA-authorised pilots are experienced in inspecting complex, elevated structures, capturing clear, systematic imagery of turbine blades, towers, nacelles and other critical components. We focus on identifying visible defects, deterioration and potential areas of concern, providing asset owners, operators and maintenance teams with reliable visual evidence to support informed decisions, without the need for costly rope access or unnecessary downtime.
Clients choose Drone Site Surveys for our specialist experience, professional standards and independent approach:
How it works
Our drone turbine inspection process
From first enquiry to secure delivery, every survey follows the same six steps, so you always know what happens next and when.
Tell us about the property
Email us the site address, the number and type of turbines, and the deliverables required. We’ll come back with the options available.
Planning and quote
We carry out a desktop assessment of the site and the surrounding airspace, check the survey against current UK drone regulations, and prepare your quote. You receive it by email with no obligation, along with the airspace map for your site and an example delivery so you can see exactly what you’ll be getting.
Booking your date
Once you’re happy with the quote we add your job to the schedule and start monitoring the Met Office forecast. In the meantime we prepare the pre-flight paperwork, including our risk assessment and method statement (RAMS), which we can send over for your records. As soon as we have a clear weather window and pilot availability, we confirm your attendance date. You don’t normally need to be on site.
The survey
Our CAA approved pilot captures every blade, the tower and the nacelle in UHD 4K, with thermal capture where specified.
Processing
Every image is checked and organised into colour-coded folders. Any thermal analysis or reporting you’ve asked for is completed at this stage.
Delivery
We email you a link to our secure online portal, where your imagery, reports and any other agreed outputs are ready to view, download and share with your team or contractors. Alongside the deliverables you’ll find a folder containing the pre-flight paperwork, a copy of the drone airspace map for your site and any other relevant documents, so everything from the survey is in one place.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about drone wind turbine inspections. If yours is not covered here, give us a call.
What is a drone wind turbine inspection?
A drone flies close to the turbine to capture UHD 4K images of the blades, tower and nacelle, with thermal imaging where needed. Engineers can then review the turbine’s condition without anyone climbing it.
What defects can you find?
Common findings include leading edge erosion, cracks, lightning damage, delamination, and corrosion or damage to the tower and nacelle.
Does the turbine need to be stopped?
Yes, the turbine normally needs to be stopped during the inspection so each blade can be captured safely. We’ll agree the arrangements with your site team beforehand.
How often should turbines be inspected?
It depends on the turbine, its age and the manufacturer’s or insurer’s requirements. Many operators have blades inspected at least once a year, and after severe weather or lightning strikes.
Can thermal imaging see inside the blade?
Thermal imaging can help reveal defects just below the surface, such as delamination, but it can’t see everything. Our thermographers will explain what’s possible for your turbines.
Which parts of the turbine do you capture?
Each blade from every side, including the leading and trailing edges, plus the tower and nacelle. Images are organised by turbine, blade and side so defects can be located quickly.
Can you inspect a whole wind farm?
Yes. We inspect single turbines and multi-turbine sites, organising the imagery by turbine and blade so it’s easy to review.
Do I need to be on site?
We’ll need someone from your site team to stop the turbine, position the blades and brief us on any site rules. Nobody else needs to be there.
What weather do you need?
Dry conditions and low wind, so the drone can fly close to the blades safely and capture sharp images. We watch the forecast and agree the date with your site team.
